After Ajith Kumar’s Death, DGP Shankar Jiwal Orders Disbanding of All Special Police Units in Tamil Nadu

Following the shocking custodial death of a young man named Ajith Kumar in Thiruppuvanam, Tamil Nadu Director General of Police (DGP) Shankar Jiwal has issued a statewide directive to disband all Special Police Units.

Ajith Kumar was allegedly brutally assaulted by members of a special police team during an inquiry, which led to his death. The incident has sparked public outrage and protests across the state.

🔹 DGP’s Key Orders:

  • All Special Police Units operating under Superintendents of Police (SPs) and Deputy Superintendents across Tamil Nadu are to be immediately disbanded.
  • In addition, all unauthorized special teams operating under Joint Commissioners, Deputy Commissioners, and Assistant Commissioners in metropolitan areas have also been dissolved.
  • DGP Shankar Jiwal has instructed that in the future, special units should be formed only on a case-by-case basis, depending on the nature and seriousness of the crime involved.

🔹 Background of the Incident:

Ajith Kumar, a young man from Sivaganga district, was allegedly picked up by plainclothes officers for questioning and was subjected to severe custodial violence, which resulted in his death. The incident has led to widespread condemnation, with people demanding justice and stricter accountability for police excesses.

✅ Significance of the Action:

This decisive move by the Tamil Nadu DGP is seen as a major step towards police reform and restoring public trust.
